The Eastern white pine has been a significant tree throughout American history. During colonial times, the finest specimens were reserved by the British crown for use as ship masts. Today, it remains a valuable commercial timber tree as its timber is lightweight, straight-grained, and easy to work with. The Eastern white pine's fast growth and graceful form makes it a popular choice for parks, landscapes, and windbreaks. Additionally, it proudly serves as the state tree of Maine and Michigan.

Wildlife Value

Eastern white pine seeds are favored by black bears, rabbits, red squirrels and many birds, especially red crossbills. While potentially damaging to the trees, the bark is eaten by mammals such as beavers, snowshoe hares, porcupines, rabbits and mice. White pines provide nesting sites as well for many birds including woodpeckers, common grackles, mourning doves, chickadees and nuthatches.
