These heirloom dessert apples originated in Demark in 1797. They provide a striking, sweet flavor rarely found in commercial varieties. However, similar other older apple cultivars, they have a short shelf life, are susceptible to disease, and need a stable climate to thrive.

  • Produces large quantities of reddish-green apples in two to five years
  • Requires 700 chill hours
  • Needs to be planted near two separate compatible varieties, such as Anna Apple, for pollination
  • Grows better in areas with mild weather
The Gravenstein Apple Grows in zones 2 - 9
