Frequently Asked Questions

General

  • How does Arbor Day Coffee help protect the rainforest?

Arbor Day Coffee is grown in the shade of the rain forest canopy. This method encourages the farmers to cultivate coffee responsibly rather than clear-cutting areas of rain forest to make way for a more mechanized approach. Each cup you drink preserves 2 sq ft of rain forest. Learn more.

  • What certifications does Arbor Day Coffee have?

The Arbor Day Foundation has its own set of requirements to ensure our coffee is shade-grown, organic and providing social benefits to the farmers. We visit with the farmers each year to ensure they meet these requirements and certify that our coffee is indeed shade-grown.

  • What is the difference between the Arbor Day Blend and the Peru Blend?

The Arbor Day Blend was formerly known as the Peru Blend. Both are grown in the Cajamarca and Moyobamba regions of Peru and composed of a blend of multiple farms all grown in the north central part of Peru.

  • How fresh is Arbor Day Coffee?

Your coffee is roasted right before it is packaged and sent to your doorstep.

  • How long will an unopened package of Arbor Day Coffee last?

An unopened package of coffee will last approximately 6 months.

  • How long will an opened package of Arbor Day Coffee last?

It is best to use an opened package of coffee within 2 weeks.

  • How should I store my coffee?

We recommend storing your coffee in an airtight container and in a cool, dark, dry place. Storing coffee in a refrigerator or freezer is not recommended, as it mutes the aroma of the coffee and is not proven to extend life or freshness.

  • Is Arbor Day Coffee considered gluten free?

The Celiac Sprue Association (CSA) considers all fresh brewed coffee to be gluten free.

  • How is your coffee decaffeinated?

We use two methods to decaffeinate our coffee.

Swiss Water Method – This method is used for our certain blends. Beans are soaked in near-boiling water, extracting the flavor oils and caffeine from the coffee. The water is separated into a tank where it is forced through charcoal filters and generally stirred around in hot water to remove the caffeine. The beans are then reintroduced to the swill, absorbing their flavor.

European or KVW Method – This method is used for our Arbor Day Blend. Beans are soaked in near-boiling water, extracting the flavor oils and caffeine from the coffee. The water is separated into a tank where it is treated with methylene chloride. It bonds to the caffeine and is then easily removed from the flavor oils. The beans are reintroduced, absorbing their flavor.
